Boss Lady...Denise Manning,

Hi Everyone,

Happy Monday, Hope you all had a fabulous weekend! Today is the first morning in I don't know how long that it isn't absolutely freezing or pouring rain..long may it last!

Today I am back with another post from our Boss Lady series and it is all about Denise Manning, a fabulous lady and the owner of (The online store where I got my GG belt that so many of you have asked me about!)

Tell me about yourself and your business?

I launched Jewelbox jewellery in October 2016. I had previously owned a clothing boutique called PIA for almost 10 years and while the market for clothing was declining I found my costume Jewellery sales were increasing and demand for statement jewellery was growing. I had great suppliers exclusive to me in Ireland and after a lot of research I made the decision to leave clothing and develop the jewelbox brand.

Jewelbox is a range of costume jewellery from dainty pieces to large dramatic statement pieces, we stock necklaces, chains, earrings, bracelets, belts and brooches. The aim of my brand is to offer fun affordable pieces that you can add to every few weeks without it breaking the bank. I keep the price point between €10 and €65 over the range at all times.

What do you love about your job?

I love the flexibility of it, I can work from home so no overheads and I can book clients for private jewellery parties for dates that suit me. I also just adore jewellery, styling it, trying it on, imaging it and so it never feels like work. I really enjoy the the social media side of the job too and Instagram is my favourite and most effective way to promote the business

I also love the variety of roles within the job, I can be sitting at my laptop updating the website one day and working with customers at one of our pop up shops another, creating promotional videos of the jewellery or packaging up orders to be shipped to places as far away as Argentina! Its very diverse

How do you organise your time?

Well this would have to be my biggest weakness to be honest, I do struggle to set a proper schedule for myself which leads to panic at the last minute sometimes or not keeping on top of my workload. I was so used to a shop schedule that working from home definitely has it challenges in terms of self motivation.

I have been following some of the professional bloggers and try and get tips from them on how to manage my time better and so far this year it has helped. I now schedule in what im planning to do for each hour every day and while I don’t always stick to the exact time schedule I do tend to complete everything on my list by the end of the day

If you could give advice to someone starting out in business what would it be?

Work hard and be determined, take falls or failures in your stride, they are all part of the learning process and make you a better business person. Be patient! Success does not come overnight it takes years to become an overnight success

Be consistent, stopping and starting a job won’t get you anywhere, commit to it 100% and give it your all.

Be mindful of your mental and physical health, working yourself to unhealthy stress levels never works in the long run, set yourself and steady pace with proper downtime away from work so you are refreshed and excited to start each week

How would you describe your personal style?

Dressy casual mostly, I always wear plain tops or dresses when I am working at events so that I can try on jewellery pieces for my customers. I love plain t-shirts over skinny leathers and if I am doing a long day event I will often wear dressy trainers to save my feet and to keep my look young and edgy

I will always try and select a look that I can really show of some of my jewellery pieces with as I think I need to be wearing and promoting my jewellery collection at all times. I am my own brand ambassador

On days when I work from home I am usually just in comfy lounge wear, as I need to be comfortable when taking pictures of stock or doing promo videos.

I adore smart blazers and the Balmain black blazer with gold buttons is top of my wish list.

What do you read?

I love to read and am a bit of a bookworm, it really helps me to relax. I am currently reading the Michelle Mone autobiography as she is a massive inspiration. A woman who started at the very bottom at a very young age and grew a world class brand in Ultimo. I think its always good to read other peoples business stories, you can take a lot not only from their success but from their failures too.

When I need a distraction from business I like nothing more then a good chick lit book and Sinead Moriarity or any of the shopaholic books by Sophie Kinsella make me laugh out loud!

How and where do you find inspiration?

Everywhere! That’s the great thing about life there is inspiration all around us. I often get the best ideas from my customers. They will be calling me to get a particular piece and describing a look they have in mind, and then in trying to get them what they want I can come up with new styles or ways to wear jewellery. Online is also a great way to inspire ideas, I’m not a fan of copying someone’s style however if you go on Pinterest of Instagram you will see so many great ideas and you can take a little bit here and there to come up with something unique to you. Plus this is a great way to keep an eye on trends and see what people are looking for

How do your friends describe you?

Hmmm I’d think they would say I was kind, loyal, stubborn at times. Patient to a fault. Good to talk to as I hope that I am a good listener and I always try to give good advice. They would say I was a worrier, usually when there is nothing to worry about. Possibly a bit set in my ways at times and I’m definitely the practical one of the bunch, however I really hope they would say I was great fun and good for a laugh and didn’t take life to seriously!

If you could travel anywhere where would you go and why?

I would love to travel across America, there are so many cities I am longing to visit. I have only ever been to New York and I really loved it. I would love to go south and visit Dallas and Texas, get to a ranch and ride a horse across the plains, New Orleans as it is supposed to be magical and like a trip back in time. Chicago and Boston for the culture and business aspects of the cities. California to take in LA, Vegas and all the way up the coast to San Fran. Colorado as its listed as one of the best places in the world to live so Id be keen to check that out. Washington for the history, my list is endless…

How would you describe yourself in one word?
